One of the visitors to the club last night was someone who is very new to photography and I recommended looking at a book by Tom Ang, who I finds writes in a clear and easy to understand style. Off the cuff, I could not recall its title, so I thought I would post it here.
The one I had in mind is "Digital Photography Masterclass".

Looking at my copy, I can see that it does make certain assumptions about the reader's knowledge, although it is certainly a book which will take you a long way once you have mastered the camera's controls.
For the complete beginner, something like the "Collins Complete Photography Course" might be better as it starts with . I do not have this book myself and have not seen it, but it does get good reviews. The only caveat is that as an older publication, in addition to the information about digital imaging it does seem to cover film photography in some depth, which might not be relevant to someone starting out today. That does not make it any less useful, although some might find the inclusion an irritation.

Langford's Starting Photography also has some good reviews on Amazon and is another that is worth investigating. Once again, I do not own the book so cannot make it a recommendation, but it does appear to be a good introduction to the topic.
