PAD 110 - Contemporary

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 23 Apr 2013, 11:23

Day 110 and a trip into London stopping off at the Photographers' Gallery on the way. The gallery shows a lot of contemporary work which is quite different from the style of photography we see at the club. Judges would have a field day with most of the images which hang on the walls. ;)

Sitting in the cafe there, nursing a coffee*, I decided to shoot through the window and see if I could capture something more in keeping with the type of photography which the gallery displays.

Panasonic DMC-G3
Leica DG Summilux 25 f/1.4 (50 mm equivalent for 35 mm)
1/60 sec
f/6.3
ISO 200

Mono conversion in Silver Efex Pro 2.

* Gastronomic tip - the gallery serves quite a good of coffee and I often drop in for a cup if I am in the area.

I'd been interested to see some examples of the contemporary work you mean if you have any examples?

A good place to start your research would be the Photographers' Gallery website.

Oh I did already! It was more if there was a specific set of images or an artist that you thought would particularly give judges a field day.

Sorry, but my brain can only cope with the relatively short list of photographers whose work I like. There is not much capacity left over to remember the names of those where I wonder why the photographer bothered. As an indicator anything which wins the Deutsche Borse prize or the RPS International Print Exhibition is likely to be a contender. However, one photographer who does stand out is Rut Blees Luxemburg, but only because I once had the misfortune to sit through a talk which she gave at a RPS event a couple of years ago. It was at the end of the session and quite a few people suddenly remembered that they needed to leave early.

I would recommend going to the Photographers' Gallery to see the Bert Hardy exhibition in the basement, which features some fine traditional black and white work. It also has the advantage that you can buy the exhibits, which have been signed by the man. All you need is a spare £1,500 + VAT sloshing around for each print which takes your fancy. :(
